Observatory Park Community Garden

Planting day at the Observatory Park Community Garden

Planting day at the Observatory Park Community Garden

During the summer and fall, the neighborhood maintains a community garden at the corner of Observatory Park at South Fillmore and East Warren Avenue. The garden is planted in conjunction with Grow Local Colorado and the produce from the garden goes primarily to the Food Bank at 2000 S. Milwaukee.

This garden is completely staffed by neighbor-volunteers.  If you want to get involved or help out, volunteers can sign up for certain times to help weed, clean up, and harvest. The Parks Department will water.

For more info, email Diana Helper, UPCC Parks and Open Space chair at parks@upcc.us.

Good afternoon, Observatory Park Gardeners:

I stopped by Observatory this morning and was pleased to see how gorgeous it continues to grow. Thank you all for doing such an incredible job. I did “harvest” the Japanese Beetles that are abundant among the marigolds. I am hoping they don’t move to the vegetables. If you encounter them, just pull them off the plant/flower and step on them on the side walk. Or let the kids take them home and keep them in a jar. Believe me, you don’t want them in your garden!

Denver Parks has asked if Grow Local Colorado would like the same park beds we have this year. That is a testament to the hours you have put in at Observatory. If Park’s staff isn’t happy with how a garden looks all summer long, they pull it from the list. So thank you for making Grow Local look good. We know we can’t do this without you.

This is also a good time to ask for suggestions for next year’s garden. You’ve all put time in at the garden and have probably thought, “Wouldn’t it be nice if…” We want to hear what you’d like to see. We’ll be happy to accommodate provided we have the gardeners willing to help again.

Thank you one and all. So far Observatory has provided 45 pounds of fresh produce to the local food pantry and you all have spent over 30 hours making sure that happened.
