Dear University Park Neighbor,

The following are the announcements for September 2011 brought to you by the University Park Community Council (UPCC). We are a few days early so we could remind you about large item pickup beginning in some parts of our neighborhood tomorrow (Monday). We hope to see you on September 25th for our 125th Celebration.

  • Large Item Pickup is scheduled for the next two weeks in our neighborhood. Visitthe City website to find out which week you are scheduled for and details of how to participate.
  • University Park 125th Anniversary Celebration: Then and Now
    • September 25th at Observatory Park. Click for more details.
      • 2:45 Gather on steps of Observatory for Walking Tour
      • 3pm Walking Tour around park guided by historians, authors and residents Don and Carolyn Etters
      • 3pm Music and Social Hour begin
      • 4pm Program in front of Observatory
      • 5pm Pot Luck and Picnic on Warren Street (Bring blankets and/or chairs)
    • We want photos…including UPark Elementary School photos! Please email, mail or drop off your favorite photos of the neighborhood. They can be old or new, digital or print. Email photos@upcc.us or mail or drop off at:

    • UPark resident and artist Betsy Johnson Welty has been chosen to create the original work of art and commemorative poster for the 125th Celebration. She is giving of her time and talents to the neighborhood and we could not be more delighted!
    • We are still in need of some additional music for the event. If you sing, play an instrument or are in a band and want to get involved in this great event, emailvp@upcc.us.
    • We need some volunteers on the day of the event. We have a variety of needs.Learn more or email vp@upcc.us if you are willing to help.
  • The Purple Pages Directory will be distributed this month. Keep your eye out.
  • There continues to be reports of coyotes in our neighborhood. View the City’s information and tips page to keep safe.
  • Do you know who is in charge of the vegetable garden at Observatory Park? Please contact Dana at vp@upcc.us if you do (we want to include this person in the 125th celebration).
  • A meet and greet for Anne Rowecandidate for Denver School Board, will be held at Observatory Park (SE corner of the fields on Iliff & Milwaukee) on Thursday,September 1st at 8:45am. 
  • A meet and greet for Roger Kilgore, candidate for Denver School Board At-large,with be held at 2275 So Monroe St on Friday, September 9th from 5:30 – 7:30pm. For more information and to RSVP to Rosemary at rosemary.stoffel@gmail.com, or 303-692-9197.
  • The final public meeting to show the revised concept for the southeast park access improvements at Washington Park will be held Tuesday, September 13, 2011 5:30 pm – 6:45 pm. Learn More.
  • There are a series of public meetings about improvements to Washington Park. The next two are August 30th and September 20th. Learn more if you are interested in attending.
  • Accelerated Schools is installing a new garden and outdoor classroom and would love neighborhood involvement in the future. Email Bryon Gentry atbgentry@acceleratedschools.org for more information.
  • Consider supporting the UPCC.

  • TIP: There are still Free Pig Roasts every Friday at 7pm at Crimson and Gold on University & Asbury. Get there on time because once it runs out, there is no more until the following Friday.

    • 5pm Pot Luck on Warren Street
  • Afternoon Tea at Accelerated Schools October 1st from 2 – 4pm.
  • UPCC General Meeting
    • We are still looking for a social hour family or sponsor to provide beverages and cookies before the meeting. Email vp@upcc.us if interested.
  • Jiaqi “Dragon” Long piano concert at Bethany Lutheran Church on October 23rd from 1-3pm. This is a benefit for Accelerated Schools.
